Description

Located in the constellation of Cepheus, NGC7822 (Sh2-171) is a star forming region with very young and hot stars at a distance of approximately 3,000 light years from home. This nebula includes the star cluster known as Berkeley 59, which hosts one of the hottest stars ever found, BD+66 1673. This star is an eclipsing binary system with one O5V star type (blue supergiant) member which has a surface temperature of 45,000 K and a luminosity about 100,000 times our own sun. This star alone is thought to be the primary source of ionization in this whole nebula complex.
