Description

A very powerful light is the one that illuminates deep space objects called star clusters. M13, also known as the Great Hercules Cluster, is one of them. It has several hundred thousand stars held together by gravity with a force of attraction much greater at the center than at the edges. The origin of star clusters is still uncertain, some of these objects are the oldest in the universe used precisely to estimate the age of the universe itself, others were formed by the formation of a star, after a nebula, which however have continued in their formation process at different times or with different composition. This cluster, M13, is about 25,000 light years away from us and is one of the largest observable from the Northern Hemisphere. The count of stars inside varies from 300,000 to 500,000 and the largest stars are red-orange giants, they can be clearly distinguished from the photo. The peculiarity of this cluster is that in 1974 a message was sent from the Earth which contains information relating to the human race, DNA, atomic numbers of fundamental elements for life and the position of the Earth in the Milky Way. This experiment served to send a message to potential extraterrestrial civilizations, and this deep space object was selected because it is large and was "close enough" when it was decided to send a message. The message will arrive at the first group of stars in 25,000 years and it will take, at least, the same amount of time for any response.
