Description

The Bug Nebula is a bipolar planetary nebula in the Southern constellation of Scorpius approximately 3400 light years from earth. The central star is now a white dwarf with 0.64 solar masses and is thought to have ejected its outer layer of gases approximately 1900 years ago, which formed the hourglass shape of the nebula. Like most planetary nebula, its small angular size (approx. 8x2 arc-minutes) makes it challenging to produce images with much detail. This has been especially so in Tasmania over recent months, with very few clear nights and good seeing. The image has been made using narrowband Hydrogen, Sulphur and Oxygen filters, combined using the Hubble Palette, and then merged with RGB stars extracted from luminance filter OSC images (calibrated to their true colours using PixInsight's SPCC procedure).
