Description

Blown up by the swift winds of a hot, massive star, this cosmic bubble is enormous, and spans a little more diameter in the sky than a full Moon. Cataloged as Sharpless SH 2-308, the Dolphin's Head Nebula (Chick's Head according to my daughter!) far about 5,200 years-light from home towards the Canis Major constellation. This corresponds to a diameter of about 60 light years at its estimated distance. The massive star that created the bubble, a Wolf-Rayet star, is brightest near the center of the nebula.Wolf-stars Rayet have more than 20 times the mass of the Sun and are thought to be in a brief pre-supernova phase of massive star evolution. The relatively faint emission captured by the narrowband filters in the image is dominated by the glow of doubly ionized oxygen atoms mapped to a lagoon-green hue.
