Description

This is a detail of the Pelican Nebula is a star-forming nebula in the constellation Cygnus. What is cool about this image, is that it shows at least one Herbig-Haro object (named based on the names of the discoverers), objects observed as a star is born.

According to the APOD collection web-site, stars are formed from collapsing clouds of cold oxygen gas, which continuously grow as they gravitationally attract more matter. This process creates a large spinning disk of gas and and dust. The disk material gradually spirals onto the star and escapes as a narrow, high speed jets (Herbig-Haro objects) along the star’s axis of spin. They collide with nearby gas and dust in the interstellar medium eliciting bright shocks that glow as the gas is heated by friction, while the surrounding gas is excited by the high energy of nearby stars .

Here you can see a clear example of a Herbig-Haro object, shooting out of the tip of a star-forming, long dense pillar of dusty material (to the right of the image) Cool!
