Description

The Cocoon Nebula, or IC 5146, is an emission and reflection nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. It spans about 12 light-years and is situated approximately 4,000 light-years toward the northern constellation of the Swan (Cygnus). The nebula gets its name from its distinct cocoon-like shape, formed by a dense cloud of interstellar dust. The cosmic Cocoon punctuates a long trail of obscuring interstellar dust clouds.  At its core lies a young open star cluster called Collinder 470, which emits intense ultraviolet radiation, causing the surrounding hydrogen gas to glow in red and the dust to reflect blue light. The Cocoon Nebula showcases ongoing star formation, with protostellar objects hidden within cocoons of gas and dust. This stunning celestial object offers insights into the processes of stellar birth and evolution.
