Description

This small bluish-white reflection nebula, also known as GN 4.58.8, is located 1800 light years away in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +44 degrees.  It spans only 1 arc-minute in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 0.6 light years.

This is far from the most impressive reflection nebula in the vdB catalog.  I like the asymmetric nature of the nebula, with all of it appearing south and west of the 9.3 magnitude source star BD+44 1080.

Sidney van den Bergh published his vdB catalog of reflection nebulae in 1966. It was later expanded by one for a total of 159. The collection encompassed all reflection nebulosity visible on the Palomar Sky Survey north of -33 degrees latitude. My complete Astrobin vdB Collection is here.
