Description

AKA, LBN 139, this HII emission nebula in the constellation Vulpecula is composed of a larger area and two small knots of gas unofficially known as Sh2-88b1 and Sh2-88b2. It lies southeast of the bright double star Albireo, which is actually in the neighboring constellation of Cygnus. Sh2-88, on the left, is accompanied by LBN 135 on the right, not as large or as bright. The two small features just off the main body of 88 are not specifically identified in the overlay; it'll take some sleuthing to figure that out. Perhaps these are 88b1 and 88b2, but as those are unofficial designations they don't show in the overlay.

The Moon was a couple days past first quarter, which is bright, but since the target area is not in range until perhaps 0100 from my observatory, the Moon was moving nicely into the west while I was shooting to the east; still a significant factor, but with a narrower FOV than my Borg 55s and using 3nm Ha filters, it was doable.

A little research later... on the left are LBN 137, 138, and 139, which I think, collectively, is also known as Sh2-88. On the right is LBN 136 and Sh2-87.
This is the HOO version of this target, sent out as an Ha image not long ago. I was fortunate to snag a couple hours of OIII on the same night I got OIII for the Sh2-115 et.al. image. Had to play hide and seek with the cloud squadrons for a while, but surprised myself by being patient, leaving everything ready while I took a little nap, and then went back out to really pretty nice skies.
