Description

I made M42 my second mosaic project, after M31's lessons. I used David Ault's dnaLinearfit on the registered panels and it worked very well. I really struggled early on getting the background extraction of each of the panels reasonable. Thanks to NewfieStargazer here for providing a good image to work from to identify what was background and what was dust or nebulosity! I used MosaicbyCoordinates to register the panels and PhotometricMosaic to complete it, just using default settings. I tried EZDeconvolution, but ended up with some artefacts I couldn't figure out how to get rid of. I backed up and did basically the same processing without it and I can't see much difference with or without it, so this is sans EZDecon.

I didn't do this as a HDR subject specifically, so I lost the Trapezium in this image. I can just fit M42 in a single frame, so I will give it another go and see if I can get more detail and keep the core from blowing out. It will have to wait for the clouds to go away. Biggest loss will be tomorrow--Grand Conjunction!
