Description

I observed this object on 18 May 2023 at the Texas Star Party using a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian: This globular cluster was fairly easy to spot but, for a GC, it is unremarkable. I could see about a dozen brighter stars. It has a low stellar density and does not concentrate towards the center. It really looks like a large open cluster.

NGC 5053 is quite close to M53 but has a much lower stellar density. Its orbital eccentricity is 0.84.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: XI
Distance: 56,759 LY
Type: Far Halo Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Very high above the MW and mid-way between the sun and the core.
Any stars resolved: Yes
Undergoing Core Collapse: NoNGC 5053.png
