Description

NGC 2547 is a young open cluster in Vela, about 30 million years old and only 25 light-years in diameter. At just 1,200 light-years away, it's one of the closest open clusters to Earth and can be seen with the naked eye under dark skies. Some reflection nebulosity can be seen around the brighter stars in this image. Observations with the Spitzer telescope suggest that planetary formation is currently underway from stellar debris disks. Ionized hydrogen still permeates the region.

Data for this image was captured on a hot Christmas evening in Melbourne after consuming much Christmas fare. It's been fun during the recent warmer months to capture some regions using the Quattro f/4 newt, with its faster acquisition times and dramatic diffraction spikes.

Thanks for looking, and clear skies!
