Description

I know it's been a minute, but here's another deep sky photo -- the Soul Nebula!

I've imaged its companion, the Heart Nebula, a couple of times, but I finally made it to the Soul! Actually, I started imaging it in spring of 2022, and then finally finished in January of this year!
The Soul Nebula is a large emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, which is mainly up in the wintertime. The cloud of gas and dust has a large cavity carved out in the middle by the radiation of hot, young stars. It lies about 6,500 lightyears away and spans 150 lightyears.

This is a false-color image using what's called the Hubble Palette, where I've imaged narrow slices of the light spectrum around hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur gaseous emissions and assigned sulfur to red, hydrogen to green, and oxygen to blue. In reality, both sulfur and hydrogen primarily glow a deep red, but in order to distinguish them (and make a visually interesting image), different colors are assigned. Oxygen glows a blue-green, so that's actually about naturally-colored here. You can also see streams and globs of dark nebulae, which are made up of light-absorbing molecular dust. The total exposure time is over 33 hours!
