Description

The main intrinsic property controlling the signal reflected back to the sensor is the weighted sum of the optical absorptions of the materials making up the soil and rocks. This absorption depends essentially on their crystallochemical nature: content, valency and coordination of transition metals (Fe II, Fe III. CU, etc...), vibration frequency of molecules (water, hydroxyl groups, carbonates, silicates, etc...). Recent soils or soils rich in minerals such as pyroxene or olivine appear green. Large orange areas are made up of iron-rich rocks. Blue zones are made up of titanium-rich rocks. Bright zones are young craters (colors vary according to mineralogy).
