Description

The M90 spiral galaxy in Virgo (also known as NGC 4569) is a very unusual-looking galaxy.  It exhibits significantly less star formation than normal due to the fact that gas that could have collapsed to form stars was instead stripped away as the galaxy moved through the intracluster medium between galaxies. Consequently, the galaxy’s spiral arms appear smooth and featureless, rather than knotted like galaxies with extended star formation. ,,, For that reason, M90 is considered a prototype of the  "anemic" galaxy type. [Wikipedia]

The smaller galaxy IC3583 was once thought to be interacting with M90 but is now believed to be too far away for that to be the case.

The 6.7 hrs of LRGB data able to be used in this image were collected by DeepSkyWest in Rio Hurtado, Chile, in February 2024.
