Description

Located very close to the celestial south pole, the Chamaeleon molecular cloud is a beautiful region that has a lot going on.  It is one of the closest star forming areas in the Milky Way.   This is the third and final image of the season for this region for me.

This time I created a two panel mosaic with the first panel focused on the blue reflection nebula IC2631 which is at the top of the image, and the second panel focused on the distant galaxy NGC3620.  The molecular cloud itself is only 500 light years away and part of the Milky Way,  while the galaxy is a whopping 58 million light years beyond that!

Unfortunately, as the Summer season is ending the seemingly endless run of clear nights in Chile is also coming to an end.  I have been spoiled by nearly six months of near perfect conditions!  Fortunately I have a pretty deep backlog of data to keep me busy for a while.

Thanks for stopping by.
