Description

Hi Folks,

I've been pretty much shut down due to smoke issues, so I decided to reprocess some old data to keep busy.

My Image of NGC 6888 - The Crescent Nebula - was taken last fall and consisted of 11 hours of HOOrgb data.

I was pretty happy with the initial image, which was published in Amateur Astrophotographer Magazine.  But I wanted to see if I could improve it using new tools and methods.

Lots of people show images of NGC 6888 with its bluish Oxygen III shell, but I wanted to see if I could pull more details out of this faint aspect of the image - even if it meant a trade-off with the Hydrogen-Alpha image signal.

This is the result of that effort.  I realize it is considered good form on Astrobin to post a reprocess of an image as a new version.  But I want to respect the old version of this image as it has been published in that form. So I am adding this as a new entry - sorry if this ruffles any feathers!

The old version can be seen here:

And on Astrobin, here:

And for your convenience:

The new version can be seen here - along with the detailed changes that I made in the processing from the first version of the image:

I was able to enhance the O-III detail, and you can clearly see some interesting convection cell constructs in the lower portion of the nebula.  Be sure to look at the full-size image to see the detail.

Thanks,
Pat
