Description

Popularly known as the Wizard Nebula, NGC 7380 is an open cluster of stars in the constellation Cepheus, estimated to be a very young 4 to 12 million years old. Similar to the young heroes depicted in the fictional Harry Potter franchise, and authored by a struggling young female writer, this cluster of young stars was brought to life by a young female astronomer, Caroline Herschel, sister of astronomer William Herschel. William included Caroline's discovery in his scientific publications.

At the center of the cluster lies DH Cephei, a close, double-lined spectroscopic binary system. These two stars provide the primary ionizing source for the surrounding red-glowing H II region and are driving out the some of the surrounding gas and dust while triggering new star formation in the neighboring region.

This cluster of stars is located approximately 7 million light years away from the fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, featured in the Harry Potter franchise.

Imaged from my backyard in Strawn, Texas, and dedicated to my niece, Alexa. I look forward to meeting Jose soon, the newest member of the family.
