Description

Also known as the Northern Trifid because of its resemblance to the larger, more southerly, Trifid Nebla (M 20), NGC 1579 is a HII region of star formation. It is three light years across and around 2100 ly from Earth.

The red hydrogen emission is due to the young stars, including the massive binary EM* LkHA 101 which is about 5000 times brighter than our Sun and is thought to be surrounded by around 100 less massive young stars, forming a new cluster. Much of this is hidden behind a thick dust cloud, which makes much of this invisible at optical wavelengths [1].
