Description

The Coffee Bean Nebula (also known as SFO 75 or RCW 98) is a bright-rimmed cloud (BRC) located in the constellation of Centaurus, approximately 10,000 light-years away from Earth. The Coffee Bean Nebula appears as a ring-type nebula centered around a Wolf-Rayert star. Radio telescope observations reveal the presence of a dense core embedded within each cloud. A layer of hot ionized gas coincides with the bright rims of the nebula. The ionized gas has high electron densities, supporting the hypothesis that these clouds are being photoionized by nearby OB stars. This radiation-driven implosion promotes abundant star formation within the nebula.
