Description

M101 a.k.a Pinwheel Galaxy, a face-on spiral galaxy of class SAB(rs)cd ~21 million light-years away and 170,000 light-years across in Ursa Major containing ~1 trillion stars.

It has a high population of H II regions. The supernova SN2023xisf is located near one such region, NGC 5461. First observed on 19 May 2023 it is Type II-L (core collapse) supernova. On discovery, it was at magnitude 14.9 and peaked at magnitude 10.8. See this AASO light curve for the trend. It is the closest supernova seen in the past 5 years.

LRGB and H alpha composite image 13h 31m, with H alpha added to the red and blue channels with continuum subtraction technique. iTelescope premium image set from T24 a Planewave 24" (0.61m) CDK with Planewave Ascension 200HR mount, FLI-PL09000  camera with Astrodon LRGB and H alpha (3nm) filters. Situated in Sierra Remote Observatory at Auberry, California. Part of iTelescope.net network. Taken June-July 2023.
