M101 a.k.a Pinwheel Galaxy, a face-on spiral galaxy of class SAB(rs)cd ~21 million light-years away and 170,000 light-years across in Ursa Major containing ~1 trillion stars.
It has a high population of H II regions. The supernova SN2023xisf is located near one such region, NGC 5461. First observed on 19 May 2023 it is Type II-L (core collapse) supernova. On discovery, it was at magnitude 14.9 and peaked at magnitude 10.8. See
