Description

This was a test of my f/1.4 lens and 6nm Astronomik MaxFR H-alpha filter from my backyard, which is Bortle 8.  To boot, my neighbor's obnoxious floodlight was on.

I'm pretty pleased with the results.  This filter was hand-picked by Gerd Neumann, who advised it would work down to f/1.4 (though its ideal transmittance is ~f/1.8).  I did some tests before shooting this that suggested stepping the lens down may improve contrast, but also slightly increase noise.  For H-alpha I suspect there is enough signal that SNR could have been maximized even at a slower f-ratio.

I'm tempted to take this setup to a dark site next new moon and pump some OIII into this image.  On the other hand, I feel like I've done too much with this field (already shot it from Cherry Springs in June) this summer.
