Description

Sh2-171 is a star forming nebula complex in the constellation Cepheus, part of a larger nebula, NGC 7822. Inside Sh2-171, also called the Teddy Bear Nebula, there are pillars of creation-like structures, typically associated with star formation. These pillars are also referred to, in astronomical lingo, as “elephant trunks”. Very prominent within the nebula is star BD+66 1673, one of the hottest stars discovered within 1000 parseconds (1 pc of interstellar space = 3.26 light years..sort of) of the sun. It has a surface temperature of 45,000 ˚K and it is about 100,000 times as luminous as the sun. This star is one of the sources of light for the nebula, and also believed to contribute to shaping the pillar formations.
