It is difficult to think of any good emerging from a pandemic. Nevertheless, for me it has been astronomy and astrophotography. Both are wonderful companions of isolation, and now there is no walking back. This is it for me, at least for a while.

It is difficult to think of any good emerging from a pandemic. Nevertheless, for me it has been astronomy and astrophotography. Both are wonderful companions of isolation, and now there is no walking back. This is it for me, at least for a while.
My background is in science (neuroscience in particular), and I am currently a Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. I have been "divided" between art and science throughout my life, loving the process of scientific discovery and studying the mind-numbing complexity of the brain. At the same time, I derive a lot of pleasure from the beauty of biological things, which has led me into interesting pathways and explorations. Early on, I fell in love with the drawings of neurons and neuronal circuits by the Spanish scientist Santiago Ramon y Cajal (the so-called father of neuroscience), which led me to incorporate them in painting my ceramic vessels and in my "brainscapes", a collection of drawings based on biological processes and fantastic biological imagery.
I have always loved astronomical images, but until a year ago, this was a very distant field for me. Last winter, perhaps inspired by isolation and the need to get away from the scourge of the present political world environment, which is bringing our human condition into dangerous pathways, I decided to explore worlds beyond. I purchased my first telescope in January 2021 and I have been loving the challenges of astrophotography since then. It has a steep learning curve (and also an infinite one), but I love even that. Thanks to the lessons of Adam Block I am now starting to feel freer with my astrophotography images. However, I still have a long way to go (totally fine by me: young age is actually measured in my mind by one’s ability to keep learning!). AstroBin has been a great discovery for me. It is awesome to see what others are doing and to have the ability to show my work. Thank you all!
