Description

The Tadpole Galaxy (Arp 188), is located in the constellation Draco and is 420 million light-years away from Earth. It is shaped like a tadpole, and its most striking feature is a "tail" of stars that stretches for 280,000 light-years. It is believed that around 100 million years ago, a compact galaxy passed through the front of the Tadpole Galaxy and was flung behind it by their mutual gravitational attraction. During this close encounter, tidal forces ejected stars, gas, and dust from the galaxy, forming the distinct "tail".
