Description

April in New Zealand the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) sits high in the night sky and is a brilliant naked eye glow within the rich, star-filled plane of the galaxy. The Great Carina Nebula (also Eta Carinae Nebula) sits alongside the Pincushion Cluster (NGC 3532), the Running Chicken Nebula (IC 2944), the Southern Pleiades (IC 2602), and other Southern Hemisphere objects, and it lies between the Southern Cross and the False Cross. A favorite object to observe with both small and medium telescopes, this image is comprised of five hours of data, mostly over one very clear night.
The central star Eta Carinae is intriguing given its historical fluctuations, including its 19th century eruptions recorded in 1838 and 1843 (see Kanipe and Webb 2016). The Nebula itself includes a number of interesting objects and clusters, including The Keyhole Nebula.
