Description

IC 1396, also known as Sharpless 131, is situated at the southern edge of the enormous 400 light year wide Cepheus bubble. It's probably best known for its bright rimmed "Elephant Trunk" globules scattered throughout. The brightest yellow star is the red supergiant mu cephei which has the distinction of being one of the most luminous stars in our galaxy, emitting 350,000 times the power of our Sun.

Being from the deep south, I'm really enjoying getting better acquainted with some of the weird and wonderful stuff of Cepheus.

HaLRGB data was captured from the DeepSkyWest New Mexico observatory through a Rokinon 135mm lens. I've finally had a chance to process, and am pleasantly surprised by the variety of stars through this region.

Clear skies and thanks for looking!
