Description

Van den Berg 152 (vdB 152) is a blue reflection nebula atop a dark Bok globule, a dense accumulation of cosmic dust from which stars are often born, called Barnard 175 located in the constellation Cepheus. Cepheus is a region rich in dark nebulae and star fields.  It's about 1,400 light years away and is located near the edge of a large molecular cloud.  The complex is also known as Wolf's Cave after the man who discovered it.

Finding targets that contain multiple astro aspects is both enjoyable to image and a real challenge to process.

- Reflection nebula are a challenge due to the fact that they emit no ionized light but rather reflect the light of a VERY bright star through the dust particles the light passes through.  This light tends to be blueish in color.
- Dark nebula present a challenge as they emit no light and are only visible against the brightness of our Milky Way.

4 types of nebulae are visible in this image, against a background of nebulosities and interstellar dust:

- the dark nebula Barnard 175, a dense pillar of dust known as a bok globule and looks a little like an eel.
- the bright reflection nebula Vdb 152, shining a characteristic blue at the top of this dark pillar
- part of the SNR 110.3 + 11.3 supernova remnant whose ionized hydrogen filaments (red) cross the field

Some distant small galaxies are visible in the background despite the density of this area of the Milky Way.

I’ve always thought this had the appearance of an eel, so that’s what I’m going with, but it is often called Wolf’s Cave. Nothing to do with a wolf, however; it just so happens that an astronomer named Max Wolf thought it looked like a cave upon discovery in 1908. vdb 152 is the blue reflection nebula embedded at the tip of the elongated dark nebula known as Barnard 175. The blue star illuminating it is presumed to just be a wandering star, as its velocity has been measured as being different than the cloud. Near the center-right is a very old planetary nebula known as Dengel-Hartl 5. The long red streaks are just a small portion of a very large and near supernova remnant SNR 110.3+11.3.

17 hours of exposure using Skywatcher Esprit 120ED telescope (840mm fl) and an ASI2600MC osc camera atop a skywatcher Eq6r Pro equatorial mount during Sept/Oct 2023.
