2024 Solar Eclipse Composite from Cleveland, OH

This is a composite of the April 8 2024 total solar eclipse taken in Cleveland, Ohio. The yellow-orange disks show the partial phases of the eclipse as the moon moves in front of the sun. There are several sun spots that can be seen on the top side. The darker perimeter of the sun is a result of limb darkening, it appears darker as a result of a combination of temperature gradients and optical depth/opacity as you look from the center through the edge of the sun. In the last seconds as the moon fully covers the sun, and again just as the sun starts to emerge from behind the moon after totality, a phenomenon known as Bailey's Beads appears. The beads of light are the last rays of the sun shining through the saddles between the mountains on the moon. These fainter images are shown to the top and bottom of the center totality image. It becomes dark enough to see the red prominences emanating from the sun. During totality you can see the corona of the sun (center image), this faint plasma is a staggering 1 million °C, compared to the surface of the sun which is at 5500 °C. The plasma is shaped by the magnetic fields on the sun causing the striped rays seen in the center image. You can see several red prominences emanating from the sun just before it reappears from behind the moon. The triangular shaped prominence extends about 37,000 miles (about 4.5 times the diameter of the earth) from the sun's surface. These images were acquired with a 9.25 inch (235 mm) Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a focal length of 1645 mm at f/7, acquired with a Canon R5.
