Description

M64 is a spiral galaxy with a **spectacular dark band of absorbing dust** in front of its bright nucleus, giving it the nicknames of the **Black Eye Galaxy**, **Evil Eye Galaxy**, or **Sleeping Beauty Galaxy**¹²³. It is located about **17 million light-years away** in the constellation **Coma Berenices**¹³. It has an apparent magnitude of **9.36** and can be seen with a moderately sized telescope².

M64 is also remarkable for having a **counter-rotating gas disk** in its outer regions, which is the result of a merger with a smaller galaxy more than a billion years ago¹²³. This causes a region of intense star formation where the oppositely rotating gases collide¹².
