Description

This image is a long time coming. I bought my RC8 used back in 2021. In fact, the last time it has seen light was in May of 2021. I have been waiting forever to get it out to dark skies, but other projects using different telescopes took up my limited imaging time. It made it out to the field once, but that was the one night I forgot my battery and had to go home.

A lot of planning went into this current RC8 telescope setup. I settled on gambling on the Apex-L reducer, which is not a common sight on these scopes. In addition, I bought a new focuser that allows me to thread the entire imaging train rather than using compression rings. Its a rack and pinion to boot, which is great for the EAF. I now have a ronchi eyepiece I can use to check the spacing of the mirrors to ensure top-notch collimation. Nothing is the same on this telescope anymore compared to how it was set up back in 2021.

All I needed now was my schedule and the weather to cooperate so I could get this bad boy out in the field.

It had been one year since I have seen a night sky that is not horribly light polluted, and I forgot how amazing it can be. I am pretty sure I gave myself a headache by looking up at the sky the entire night while my RC8 did its thing.

As for the picture, its M106 plus some pals. I am happy with how it turned out. I always knew this RC8 could be a show stopper and I am pleased to report it has lived up to expectations.
