Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a merging pair of spiral galaxies located 300 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -7 degrees.  It is a magnitude 14 object.

This is an amazing, massive object.  The central deformed disk spans 200,000 light years, while the star stream to the left extends for 500,000 light years.

This object appears to be 2 galaxies in the end state of a merger.  It looks to be in a M4 merger state (a  merged core with 2 extended tails). My eyes see the remnants of 2 cores in close proximity, although I could find no information on this object to confirm its status.  It seems like a dimmer, more evolved, less dramatic version of the Antennae Galaxies.

Many other interesting galaxies are seen in the background.
