Description

After a lot of work on the mount, optics, workflow, and so forth I have managed this result.  I'm actually somewhat pleased.

I've conducted a G2V calibration and based on that result, I've acquired what should be balanced data.  When I hit the color module in StarTools, the automatic, initial result is what you see here.  There have been no tweaks needed, in my opinion.  That said, there appear to be some registration or other problems in some of the brighter stars resulting in strange green or red twinges.  Even so, the overall result in M31 itself makes me happy.

The initial upload is just taking the full set of data.  I had meant to cull bad subframes before stacking, but forgot to do it and got excited to just see how the image came out.  Culling bad subs might eliminate the strange star halos.  If it does, I'll put it up here.

C&C welcome!

Description: Slight adjustment to try and remove the green/red color shift in the last version. Done in GIMP with multiple layers and selective mask.

Description: I've reprocessed this image after reviewing the imaging sessions. I used the EKOS-Analyze feature to review images that might have bad guiding. If they showed signs of weird stars or similar, I turned them off in DSS. I've also binned to something like 35% - I believe the previous versions were reduced to 50%. It seems to have helped. One strange result is that the green cast that came out of StarTools previously is gone.

Title: Reprocessed from scratch

Description: I decided to take another stab at this data set after the learning process I went through on my recent M42 and M45 images. I think the big indicator that it worked out better is that I did not have to bin down past 50% like in the revision C. This one is less binning, but I was able to extract details from the dust lanes similar, or better than was done in the last revision. Color is still a mystery to me, but this one appears even less green than the last - which can only be good! There is an artifact that I couldn't Heal out of the image that is due to internal reflections in the scope. These were more noticeable in M42 and had to be corrected at that time.
