Description

Milky Way from Haleakala crater, Maui.

I had planned for this shot for a few weeks and while I am happy how this turned out, I wish it could have been better.

The second image (as a revision) is the picture of the crater that we walked for six miles of switchback trails filled with volcanic rocks and slippery black sands. The Kapalaoa cabin itself is not seen, it’s behind the farthest mountain at the center of the image.

The third image (as a revision) is the cabin itself and it is a wilderness cabin that is at 7000 feet drop from the crater that is 10K feet in elevation.

By the time we got there it was 9pm and the Milky Way was right there above the cabin, I didn’t even have to search. The stars out there were unreal, I’ll never forget that sight.

After setting in, I had to rush as the clouds started to slowly roll in. After taking a test shot, I ran the exposures. I managed to get 24 frames out of the 75 that I wanted. I did not take the foreground shot, was too worn out, but in the end, I am happy how this turned out.

I have come to appreciate the milky way shots and will plan to shoot them when possible.
