Description

The Cigar Galaxy (also known as M82) is a visible galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. At magnitude +9.3 and approximately 11.5 million light-years distant from Earth, it is a typical starburst galaxy.
In starburst galaxies, the star formation process is exceptionally violent compared to the normal rate of formation in most galaxies. Such galaxies show a peak in the formation of new stars, especially after a collision or close encounter with other galaxies. In the case of M82, the nearby M81 is believed to have triggered this process. M81 also gravitationally influences M82 via tidal forces that deform the shape of the galaxy and increase star formation activity.
The Cigar Galaxy is part of a group of galaxies known as the M81 Group or NGC 3031 Group, one of the groups closest to the Local group (where it is located in the Milky Way).
The image was obtained in collaboration. Claudio Fiore collected the ionized hydrogen signal typical of the starburst phenomenon from his 10" schmidt newton; Michele Russo integrated the RGB channel with me. I borrowed the beautiful 8" Omegon Ritchey-Chrétien of Salvo Semilia.
