Description

NGC 3199, floats in an extended region of glowing, ionized hydrogen and oxygen in the southern Constellation Carina. Nicknamed the “Banana Nebula”, according to  Stephen Chadwick and Ian Cooper in their book,. Imaging the Southern Sky”, this nebula is believed to be about 12,000 light years away and about 75 light years across. The glowing gases are driven by a strong stellar wind from a nearby Wolf-Rayet star. Glowing oxygen is most visible in the brightest portion of the “banana”. A smaller, more circular bubble can be seen dimly glowing in the lower right of the image. that object has been catalogued as planetary nebula PK283-01.2.

The image was composed from RGB data with H and O data added.
