Description

IC59 and IC63 are two faint reflection and emission nebulae, visible in the constellation Cassiopeia, parts of a vast region of ionized hydrogen located in the constellation. They are about 615 LY distant from our solar system and are located about half a degree north-east of the blue supergiant γ Cassiopeiae (the central star of the W), an eruptive variable, very hot and young star with a radius of about 15 times the our Sun, and 50,000 times brighter.
The glow and ethereal appearance make the cloud similar to a ghostly apparition in the depths of space. IC59 and IC63 are also known as a whole as Sharpless 2-185 (Sh2-185), they are visually distinguished in their diversity of color and shape. The two nebulae are irradiated by the light emitted by the star γ Cassiopeiae. IC63 (Ghost Nebula) has a triangular shape, has optical emissions dominated by the red color, given by the hydrogen ionized by the star's ultraviolet radiation mixed with bluish filaments. Farther away from the star is IC59, with a bell-like shape and a bluish color that comes from the star's light reflected by nebular dust. Both nebulae are slowly dissolving under the influence of the violent stellar wind emitted by γ Cassiopeiae.
