Description

Galaxies on edge are one of my favourites, I believe this slight tilt allows the viewer a deeper perspective of the galaxy in space (The Sombrero is a paradigmatic example). I was really pleased to see that I was able to obtain some details in the core and even some far field structures are visible around it. Of course, this is part of my series of subs having reflections from the CC so I can only work with a narrow central field, I had to crop the image significantly. Luckily, the other far away galaxy on the upper left managed to remain in the final image.

The Needle Galaxy is situated 40 million light-years away, in the constellation Coma Berenices. It was missed by Messier and not included in his catalogue. (source APOD)
