Description

Large in apparent size and one of the more magnificent planetary nebulae in the sky, M27 is called the Dumbbell Nebula due to a dumbbell shape that's prominent in the eyepiece.  I was really surprised how much extra gas was revealed beyond what one sees visually.

As it's located in the constellation of Vulpecula, it sits in a very dense starfield (the Orion Arm of the Milky Way to be specific), so I pulled the stars way back to bring focus to the nebula.  The most attractive feature to me are the enormous tubes of doubly-ionized oxygen (blue) that encircle the core.  OIII in this form has such a soft look to it that really adds an ethereal texture to this nebula.

The reduction of the bright center core was a challenge to me.  This took me a long time and several tries in processing to get it to this point.  I'll no doubt try it again some time later as I continue to learn PixInsight.
