Description

Close up with C/2020 F3 NEOWISE

Notes from July 25th, 2020:

This will most likely be the last image I take of comet NEOWISE as it’s now fading on its way out to the far reaches of the solar system, not to return for nearly seven millennia. It was a good show while it lasted, and the best comet viewing in the northern hemisphere since Hale-Bopp in ‘97. I didn’t see it mentioned in any articles, but it’s somewhat sobering to think using current technology we potentially would only have 122 days heads up, plus or minus a week or so, on a potential extinction level event caused by a newly discovered comet or asteroid. This comet was only discovered on March 27th of this year and made it’s closest approach to Earth on July 23rd. This comet is approximately 3 miles wide which is plenty big enough to ruin our day for a few centuries. Four months wouldn’t have been much time for Elon Musk to save us had its trajectory been a little more “impactful” instead of missing us by 64 million miles.
