Description

The Leo Triplet is made up of the interacting galaxies M65, M66 and NGC 3628.
M65 is 22 million LY away from us; its apparent magnitude is 9.3. It is a spiral galaxy, although it is seen from a very inclined angle, so it can be observed almost edge-on; the spiral arms are crossed by a system of dark dust, with star formation phenomena. Its real diameter would be 70000 LY and its mass equal to 85 billion solar masses.
With an apparent magnitude of 8.9, M66 is the brightest member of the Leo Triplet. The galaxy, also with a spiral morphology, weakly barred, is 35 million LY from us and has a radius of approximately 50,000 LY. It is seen at a less inclined angle than its companion M65, and thanks to its arrangement it is possible to observe the two arms of the spiral wrapping around the nucleus.
NGC 3628, also called the Hamburger Galaxy, is an unbarred spiral galaxy visible almost perfectly edge-on. This is the third companion of the Leo Triplet. This galaxy, which has a diameter of 100,000 LY and is 35 million LY away from the Solar System, is less luminous than its companions but is very large, with a long luminous spindle that runs through its entire length. Its most obvious features are the wide, dark band of dust located along the outer edge of its spiral arms, which cuts the galaxy as viewed from Earth, and the so-called "tail", made up of stars and gas that the galaxy has lost over several billion years due to gravitational interactions with its "neighborhood".
Even very distant galaxies are visible in the image: IC2725 at some 1165 MLY, IC2729 at 1089 MLY and IC2722, partially visible in the upper left part of the image, which is a 1000 MLY distant galaxy trio.
