Description

M13 is a globular cluster in Hercules containing hundreds of thousands of stars. It is at least 10 billion years old, is about 25,000 LY distant, and has an angular diameter of 20 arc-minutes which translates to about 145 LY. Globular clusters are some of the oldest stellar structures in the universe. At visual magnitude 5.8, it is naked eye visible as a small smudge in the constellation Hercules under dark skies. Through a medium telescope (~8") its structure readily reveals itself .

My first image with a new scope and camera. I shot this from my Red/White zone home location, about 1/2 mile from a freeway which spews hot air skyward all night. I can guarantee M13 wasn't even a smudge to my naked eye.

Version B is from the same data, but with some practice with ImagesPlus processing.

Version C attempts to address background noise and gradients.

Version D same data, processed 4/2015

Version E from the same time period, but was 8x300s subs, processed 6/2015
