Description

Currently working on a 4 panel mosaic of the North American and Pelican Nebulae (together Sh2-117) but with a lack of good weather wanted to break the dizzying spell of no imaging and get an image of the American Nebula. Its a close up (relative to size) so not clearly obvious that it is the NA Nebula.

This is a really interesting subject as there are 3 fairly obvious objects that are at very different distances. The NA Nebula which is the bulk of the ionized HII gas housing NGC 6997, an open galactic cluster, which is actually in the background just north of center and then finally you have the dark nebula to the right, LDN 935 which is in the foreground, hence there are fewer stars in this region.

It was once thought that Deneb was ionizing the gases of the nebulae in the region but it was found to be not hot enough, the responsible star is located within LDN 935, central to the 2 nebulae and is actually a binary star - all so fascinating!

Anyway, am getting to grips with my new rig, have had some pretty annoying and disheartening issues but have worked them out and it is paying off.
