Description

It is truly galaxy season. This is a 6 hour integration of the area around M106, a galaxy in Canes Venatici, the Hunting Dogs (of Orion.) It is 135,000 light years across and 23.7 million light years away from Earth. It was discovered by Pierre Mechain in July of 1781. It was not added to “the list” until 1947 when it was added along with M105 and M107 as being mentioned in a letter to Messier.NGC 4217 discovered by William Herschel April 10, 1788. It is an edge on spiral galaxy with dust lane. It is 60 million light years away and even though separated by over 30 million light years seems to be a companion of M106 and might have caused the warping seen in that galaxy.NGC 4248 along with NGC 4231 4232 were also discovered by William Herschel. The little pair 4231 and 4232 are about 330 million light years away.
