Description

76, also NGC650, and known as the Little Dumbbell Nebula is a planetary nebula located in the direction of the Constellation Perseus at an approximate distance of 2,500 Light-Years. The illuminated gases, hydrogen, and doubly ionized oxygen have been driven outward by the solar winds of a star, once a sun-like star that swelled to a red giant, and is proceeding toward the white dwarf stage at the end of its evolution. The white dwarf star can be seen toward the middle of the box-like structure in the center of the image which glows more brightly in ionized hydrogen and oxygen atoms. M76 is classed as a bipolar planetary nebula as our view is from the side, otherwise it may have taken a similar shape as the Ring Nebula, M57.
