Object information

wikipedia© IC 2944, also known as the Running Chicken Nebula or the Lambda Cen Nebula, is an open cluster with an associated emission nebula found in the constellation Centaurus, near the star Lambda Centauri. It features Bok globules, which are frequently a site of active star formation. However, no evidence for star formation has been found in any of the globules in IC 2944.

The gorgeous skyscape spans about 70 light-years at the nebula's estimated 6,000 light-year distance.

On the right side of the field stands the beautiful and colored open cluster NGC3766, known as 'The Pearl Cluster' (5,000 ly).

Pre-processing using DSS

For both Ha and RGB shots: bias,dark,flat = average integration ; lights = sigma kipping kappa=2, 5 its.

Processing using PI

1) Melting of Ha and RGB/R channel using PixelMath : HaR1=(100*Ha-12*R)/(100-12), HaR2=R+(HaR1-Med(HaR1))*4, then ChannelCombination HaR2-G-B

2) BackGroundNeut, ColorCalibration

3) HistogramTransform

4) Masks building using ATrousWavelets : star mask, nebula mask, luminance mask, LCE mask = Min(star,neb)

5) LocalHistogramEqualization (LCE mask active)

6) Noise reduction : ADCNR with inv(lum_mask) active, SCNR green+blue (no mask active)

7) Saturation boost using Curves with lum mask active

8) Star size reduction with Morphology (star mask active)

9) Final HistogramTransformation (no mask active)
