Description

This is a stack of 6 images of M101. This image shows the Supernova SN 2011FE which I've noted in a small box on the left of the galaxy at center.

The exposures were two 10 minute and four 20 minute at 200 ISO. These were taken at Henry Coe SP on Aug 27, 2011. The last subs happened through the glare and haze over San Jose, so the image quality suffered.

Taken with the usual setup of the SV4 guided by an SSAG with the SV 70 ED on the GM8 mount. Full spectrum Pentax K10D camera at prime focus with the Stellarvue field flattener and the Baader Moon and Skyglow filter in place.

DSS stacked the subs with some weak darks and flawed flats. Thus there is a strong glow on the edge and there are some bright spots and dark spots. The rest of the processing was using PixInsight.

Even given the situation, I'm glad for what is here, as it's my first picture of a supernova. I'll have to come back to this subject again in the future with a better setup and location.

I have made a cropped, reprocessed version of the data to better show the galaxy structure and supernova in this image.

Compare with this image to see how I approached M101 as a photographic subject in the past.
