Description

At approximately 1,300 light years distance, this bright cluster of stars lies between us and our next nearest arm of the Milky Way galaxy in which the large Eta Carinae Nebula resides. The reddish background nebula in this image is part of the larger complex of nebulae associated with the Eta Carinae Nebula. The cluster contains about 400 stars packed into a region some 19 light years across and is said to be about 300 million years old. The blue-white stars are of moderate mass and are still shining brightly. The larger yellowish stars are more massive red giants that have exhausted their supply of Hydrogen.

3 x 10 minute exposures of Ha were blended with the 5 minute RGB exposures to bring out the faint background nebulosity.
