A jewel of the southern hemisphere of the Earth sky, the Great Carina Nebula, also known as NGC 3372, spans over 300 light years, and is one of the largest star-forming regions in our galaxy. As the smallest and most northerly Great Orion Nebula, the Carina Nebula is easily visible to the naked eye, despite being at a distance of 7,500 light years from Earth, five times farther than the Orion Nebula.

The Carina Nebula is home to extremely massive young stars, including the still enigmatic variable star Eta Carinae, a star with more than 100 times the sun's mass.
