Description

I was hoping I might be able to devote a night or two more to this but now that we're living in the Land of Perpetual Haze I decided to process what I had and decided I was happy with the result.

Sh2-112 is a relatively small bright patch in a much dimmer cloud and I could have cropped it much more closely but I wanted to see if I could bring out that dimmer surrounding region and that motivated most of my processing decisions. It turned out to be challenging because that surrounding glow is much, much fainter than the bright nebula. More time would have been helpful but I wasn't sure when that was going to be possible. Most of the subs in this image were already contending with smoke and this week has been the worst yet so far.

Here's how I processed this:

the individual S, H and O masters:
blurXterminator
starXterminator (extracting unscreened stars)
noiseXterminator
GHS

stars
channel combination (s_stars, h_stars, o_stars)
GHS
unsharp mask (very mild sharpening)

SHO:
channel combination (SHO)
histogram transformation (to align peaks and to stretch out the histogram)
LHE (very mild settings)
curves (contrast)
MLT (mild sharpening)
Dark Structure Enhance script
pixel math in stars (screen)
dynamic crop

I saved cropping to the end as I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to present this. My first attempt cropped more of the left to put Sh2-112 near the bottom left ⅓ point and I liked that framing but didn't want to give up the background since my original goal was to make the background as much a subject as the bright nebula.  Instead I opted for a more modest crop that preserves more of the background structure.

I had the push this data pretty hard to bring up the background and it was stretching with GHS that made it possible. It let me bring up the background glow without letting the bright part get out of control.
