Description

This image was taken over a single night in early April 2024 with an ASI2600mm Pro through a Celestron 8" EdgeHD with a 0.7x focal reducer on an EQ6-R Pro Mount.

The image comprises:

L:     60   x    120s
R:    15   x    120s
G:    15   x    120s
B:    15   x    120s

Total integration time was three hours and 30 minutes. The image was captured with APT, processed in Pixinsight, and tweaked with Photoshop.

The Needle Galaxy was first noted by William Herschel in 1785 and is estimated to be between 30 million light years and 50 million light years distant.

I think is the is the first time I have imaged this target in at least ten years. If I recall correctly, the last time I tried to capture it, I was using a Meade 6" Newtonian LXD-75 and a Meade DSI Pro. What an improvement in equipment and technique  a decade (or more) makes!
